Leopold is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. This means that we have checked every single page in every title, making it highly unlikely that any material imperfections – such as poor picture quality, blurred or missing text - remain. When our staff observed such imperfections in the original work, these have either been repaired, or the title has been excluded from the Leopold Classic Library catalogue. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, within the book we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Syntax of the Moods and Tenses of the Greek Verb William W Goodwin Books

This review and rating is based on the Wipf edition. Yes, it would be nice to have it in hardbound, and yes, the text isn't as crystal clear as the original (in particular the tops and bottoms of some of the Greek letters are sometimes slightly truncated,) and yes, there is the very occasional small underlining, and yes, linguistics has advanced our understanding of ancient Greek since this book was first published. Nevertheless, all that being said, and since the original edition is rare and expensive, I still give this five stars as something every student of ancient Greek who has gotten beyond the most elementary level should have. I won't go into why: its value will immediately become apparent once you get into the habit of having it at your elbow as you read an ancient Greek text. The quality of the reproduction, while not perfect, is certainly adequate (much better than a lot of republished books nowadays,) and the paper binding at least is fairly sturdy. If you can find a copy of the original in excellent condition for a fair price, or at a high price which nevertheless you're willing to pay, get that one; otherwise, get this one. (Note: it depends on your study habits and some people may disagree, but I myself find a book like this for all practical purposes unusable on any electronic reader.)

Syntax of the Moods and Tenses of the Greek Verb William W Goodwin Books Reviews

If you've gotten this far, then you know Moods and Tenses is a must-have. The question is should I buy the William H. Allen edition now, or trust to luck in finding one in a used bookstore? The answer is buy now. Get two. The quality of the printing, paper, and binding is first-rate. At $26, the book is severely underpriced. With the demise of classical education, it might never be this available again.
As a doctoral candidate in classical philology, I strongly urge all serious Greek students to obtain this priceless book - one of the cheapest of the essential shelf of books for the classical scholar. No work comes close. This volume makes Smyth's monumental Greek grammar look childish on the subject of treatment of subordinate clauses in indirect discourse.
I bought the "Forgotten Books" edition of Goodwin's Syntax, and what I got was a poor quality reproduction of Goodwin's original text. The print is faded and hard to read, and portions the text are hand underlined by some previous reader. These messy underlines came through in the reproduction. Overall, it looks like a bad Xerox. I would recommend finding another version of this text.
Useful book with all the disadvantages spelled out by earlier reviewers. For myself, although I read the publisher's caution that the book can be read in landscape orientation only, I discovered that it was incompatible with the iPad unless I enabled the device's setting to freeze the orientation. Otherwise, no matter how the iPad was held, the text orientation changed to an unreadable angle. This is presumably not a problem on an actual . Fortunately, allows returns of books within 7 days.
Free and far beyond what someone at that budget would want. The material otherwise is sound.
William W. Goodwin's Nineteenth Century work is a welcome find and an invaluable adjunct to other Greek language explanatory texts; and, of course, the Greek verb -especially ancient forms- needs all the light of scholarship anyone can give, perhaps even now.
I love one of his stated missions (in his 1865 preface)'to treat Greek syntax not only metaphysically as so many scholars do, but (also) by the light of common sense.' This is important beyond simplicity.
I find it a welcome background and an important precursor to later texts that almost always give it referral credit.
This book is out of print. It is a classic and well worth the time and money.
This book is a great resource for any library.
Thanks!
